Where this equipment fits
Biological STP sludge and suitable industrial sludge after testing.
A Pakistan plant using drying beds or transporting wet sludge can compare a screw press with its current handling arrangement. The opportunity depends on actual solids production, available land, drying cycles and disposal cost. Biological sludge, chemical sludge and mixed industrial sludge should be tested separately because they can respond differently.
How to select sludge screw presses
Use these inputs to define the equipment duty before comparing proposals.
- 01Dry-solids throughput in kg/hour
- 02Feed concentration, polymer and cake trials
- 03Run hours, wash water and filtrate
Start with daily dry solids, not only the STP or ETP flow. For example, 10 m³/day of sludge at 1% dry solids contains approximately 100 kg of dry solids per day if the sludge density is assumed to be 1,000 kg/m³. Over a five-hour operating window, that represents 20 kg of dry solids per hour before design allowances. The hydraulic feed is still 2 m³/hour, so both limits matter.
What to check before choosing
Not every oily, fibrous or mineral sludge suits the same press. Compare tested performance and total cost with other dewatering methods.
Review feed consistency, polymer preparation, filtrate return and cake collection as one package. Confirm wash-water quality and pressure, wear parts and what happens when the feed tank empties. Obtain sludge-test results before relying on a cake-solids or polymer-consumption promise.
What affects the price in Pakistan?
The quoted price depends on dry-solids throughput in kg/hour, materials, controls and the agreed supply scope. For a useful comparison, identify freight, taxes, installation, commissioning and initial spares as separate proposal items where applicable.
For replacement equipment, share the existing nameplate, photographs and connection dimensions. For a new installation, share the design flow or loading, site location and available space. Final availability, delivery and performance terms are confirmed with the selected equipment.
Integration with your treatment plant
Dry solids in kg/day and sludge feed concentration. Required run hours, cake target and polymer testing. Cake removal, filtrate return, wash water and spares. These interfaces should be checked alongside the individual equipment specification.
Related engineering and plant servicesWorked example: cake solids change the mass you handle
Illustrative calculation, not a performance promise or plant design. The earlier sizing example gives 100 kg/day of dry solids. If a representative machine trial produced cake at 20% dry solids by mass, the estimated wet cake would be 100 ÷ 0.20 = 500 kg/day. At an assumed 15% dry solids, it would be about 667 kg/day.
That difference is about 167 kg of water per day in the cake under these simplified assumptions. Over 30 operating days, it would be about 5,000 kg of additional water to store, move or dispose of. Actual sludge production, cake solids and operating days must be measured for the project. A higher cake-solids result alone is not enough if solids escape in the filtrate or the required throughput is not achieved.
Set acceptance criteria before the sludge trial
A trial is most useful when the sample and pass criteria are agreed before testing. Do not accept a photograph of firm-looking cake as the complete result.
- Representative feed: identify the sludge source, age, storage condition and whether it is biological, chemical or mixed. Record feed concentration during the test.
- Operating point: record hydraulic feed in m³/hour, dry-solids loading in kg/hour, screw speed, run duration and the stable period used for sampling.
- Polymer basis: identify the tested polymer, preparation concentration, maturation arrangement and dose. Express the comparison on an agreed active-polymer per dry-solids basis.
- Measured outputs: use agreed laboratory methods for feed solids, cake solids and filtrate quality. Calculate solids capture from a mass balance rather than judging filtrate only by appearance.
- Operating inputs: record wash-water pressure and consumption, power, operator interventions, alarms, cleaning and any stoppages.
- Pass and repeat rules: agree acceptable ranges for throughput, cake, capture and consumables, plus what happens if the feed changes or the test is interrupted.
For background on solids units and representative samples, use the Aquenvia guide to BOD, COD and TSS reports. The dewatering trial still needs sludge-specific total-solids testing and an agreed sampling plan.
Ask for the whole dewatering package
A screw press quotation may cover only the press. Ask each bidder to mark included, optional and excluded items so the commercial comparison is like for like.
- Sludge holding and mixing, level protection and a controlled feed arrangement.
- A suitable sludge pump, including dry-run protection where required. Review progressive cavity pumps as one possible feed-pump type, subject to the actual sludge and duty.
- Polymer preparation and dosing, dilution water, flocculation and calibration provisions.
- Wash-water supply, straining, pressure requirements, drainage and the return route for filtrate and wash water.
- Cake discharge into bags, a bin or a sludge conveyor or hopper, with safe access for removal.
- Controls, interlocks, electrical supply, guarding, ventilation, commissioning, operator training and initial spares.
Compare the alternatives against the same duty
Use the same representative sludge, daily dry-solids load, operating window and cake-handling basis when comparing technologies.
- Drying beds need a land, drainage, weather and removal-cycle review. Use the drying-bed guide to compare the same dry-solids load, cake-handling basis and seasonal duty. Mechanical dewatering adds equipment, polymer, power, wash water and spare-parts requirements.
- Filter presses operate in batches. Include filling, pressure hold, plate opening, cake discharge and cloth cleaning in the daily capacity.
- Belt filter presses are continuous, but belt washing, tracking, ventilation and operator attention belong in the comparison.
- Decanter centrifuges use high-speed separation. Include power, vibration, wear protection and specialist maintenance.
No one method is automatically best for every Pakistan STP or ETP. Compare tested outputs, operator capability, utilities, disposal arrangements and the total supplied scope. Aquenvia’s sludge dewatering equipment category provides the wider equipment list.
Use the screw press versus decanter guide for a like-for-like comparison of dry-solids loading, cake, capture, return load, utilities and full package scope.
Define the operating and maintenance handover
At commissioning, record the settings and measured results at an agreed stable condition. Train operators to inspect the filtration zone, screw and discharge restriction, spray nozzles, gearbox, seals, flocculation equipment and feed pump. Maintenance frequency must follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions and observed sludge conditions.
Keep a simple operating log for feed concentration, throughput, polymer preparation and dose, cake solids, filtrate condition, wash-water use, alarms and cleaning. A change in cake or filtrate can come from the feed sludge or conditioning, not only from the press. For an existing plant, include these checks in a broader wastewater plant upgrade and maintenance review.
Separate screw thickening from screw-press dewatering
A screw thickener reduces hydraulic volume but does not produce cake. Use the screw thickener guide with the screw-press dry-solids duty to define the separate process objectives and acceptance tests.
Separate belt thickening from screw-press dewatering
A gravity belt thickener reduces hydraulic volume but does not produce cake. Use the gravity belt thickener guide with the screw-press dry-solids duty to assess whether separate pre-thickening is justified.
Separate pre-thickening from final dewatering
A rotary drum thickener reduces the hydraulic load but does not produce cake. Use the rotary drum thickener selection guide with the screw-press dry-solids duty to assess whether separate pre-thickening is justified.
Common questions
Is a screw press always cheaper than drying beds?
No. Compare equipment, polymer, power and maintenance with land, drying time, weather exposure, labour and the real disposal cost. The result is site-specific.
Does screw pressing stabilize the sludge?
It removes water. Biological stabilization, pathogen treatment and final disposal requirements are separate considerations.
