Where this equipment fits
Municipal and industrial thickening or dewatering.
For Pakistan plants using drying beds or hauling wet sludge, compare land use, monsoon exposure, labour, polymer, power, wash water and disposal arrangements. A screw press is one option alongside filter presses, belt presses and centrifuges. Select the machine from representative sludge testing and the available daily operating window.
How to select decanter centrifuges
Use these inputs to define the equipment duty before comparing proposals.
- 01Dry-solids and hydraulic loading
- 02Abrasion, polymer and trials
- 03Power, vibration and support
What to check before choosing
High-speed equipment needs wear protection and maintenance. Generic capacity labels cannot establish sludge performance.
What affects the price in Pakistan?
The quoted price depends on dry-solids and hydraulic loading, materials, controls and the agreed supply scope. For a useful comparison, identify freight, taxes, installation, commissioning and initial spares as separate proposal items where applicable.
For replacement equipment, share the existing nameplate, photographs and connection dimensions. For a new installation, share the design flow or loading, site location and available space. Final availability, delivery and performance terms are confirmed with the selected equipment.
Integration with your treatment plant
Dry solids in kg/day and sludge feed concentration. Required run hours, cake target and polymer testing. Cake removal, filtrate return, wash water and spares. These interfaces should be checked alongside the individual equipment specification.
Related engineering and plant servicesWorked example: convert daily solids into centrifuge feed duty
Illustrative calculation, not a final machine selection or performance guarantee. Assume a plant produces 960 kg/day of dry solids and plans to run the centrifuge for 12 hours/day. The required dry-solids throughput is 960 ÷ 12 = 80 kg DS/hour.
If representative feed sludge is 2.5% dry solids by mass and its density is assumed to be 1,000 kg/m³, estimated feed flow is 80 ÷ (0.025 × 1,000) = 3.2 m³/hour. Both values matter: dilute sludge can reach the hydraulic limit before the dry-solids limit, while concentrated sludge can reach the torque or solids-conveying limit first.
Confirm minimum, normal and maximum feed flow and dry-solids load with a representative sludge trial. A generic m³/hour rating does not prove cake, centrate, polymer, power or wear performance.
Worked example: estimate cake, centrate and simplified solids capture
Illustrative mass balance with simplified assumptions. If 80 kg DS/hour leaves at 20% cake dry solids, estimated wet cake is 80 ÷ 0.20 = 400 kg/hour. Feed mass is about 3,200 kg/hour, so separated liquid is roughly 3,200 - 400 = 2,800 kg/hour, before allowing for polymer solution, flush water and solids remaining in the centrate.
If a sampled centrate contains 0.5 kg/m³ of suspended solids at 2.8 m³/hour, centrate solids are 0.5 × 2.8 = 1.4 kg/hour. A simplified capture check is (80 - 1.4) ÷ 80 × 100 = 98.25%. For acceptance, use simultaneous measured feed, cake and centrate streams with agreed laboratory methods. The example is arithmetic, not an expected result.
Understand the bowl, pond and differential speed
| Variable | What it changes | Procurement and operating check |
|---|---|---|
| Bowl speed | Changes the centrifugal force available for sedimentation. | Use the supplier-approved range for the actual bowl, sludge and mechanical condition. Higher speed can increase power and wear and does not automatically improve the whole duty. |
| Differential speed | The speed difference between bowl and scroll controls how settled solids are conveyed. | Connect differential speed with torque, solids load, cake residence and discharge. Use automatic limits that protect the drive and prevent a solids blockage. |
| Pond depth and beach geometry | Affect liquid volume, clarification area and solids drainage in the bowl. | Record the selected setting or hardware and the tested cake and centrate result. A change that helps one output can affect the other. |
| Feed and polymer | Set the incoming hydraulic and solids load and the floc presented to the bowl. | Measure feed flow and solids, calibrate polymer on an active-dose basis and protect formed floc through the feed arrangement. |
Do not copy bowl rpm, centrifugal force, pond setting or differential speed from another installation. The approved operating window belongs to the selected rotating assembly, sludge trial and safety limits.
Set a representative sludge trial and acceptance basis
- Identify primary, biological, chemical, digested, industrial or mixed sludge. Record its source, age, storage, temperature, pH, total-solids range, ash or volatile fraction where relevant, fibres, fats, grit and abrasive particles.
- Include production, cleaning, chemical or seasonal conditions that change the feed. A short sample from a quiet period is not a complete procurement basis.
- Test polymer products and doses on the real sludge and make-up water. Record active content, preparation concentration, maturation, dilution, injection point and active dose per kilogram of dry solids.
- During a pilot or full-scale trial, record feed flow and solids, dry-solids load, bowl and differential settings, torque, power, polymer, cake solids, centrate solids, vibration and stable run time.
- Agree acceptable ranges for throughput, cake dry solids, solids capture, polymer, power, vibration, noise and operator intervention before procurement.
- Repeat enough accepted runs to show stable operation and safe response to minimum, normal and maximum duty. References from different sludge do not replace a representative test.
Use a polymer preparation system that can reproduce the accepted test basis. The Aquenvia wastewater-report guide explains representative sampling and solids units, but the centrifuge trial still needs sludge-specific cake and centrate analysis.
Plan wear, vibration and structural support
- Characterize grit, sand, crystals, metal particles and other abrasive solids. Check replaceable protection at the feed zone, scroll flights, solids-discharge ports and other high-wear locations.
- Specify the bowl, scroll and wetted materials for pH, chlorides, cleaning chemicals, temperature and industrial contaminants. Stainless steel alone is not a complete corrosion specification.
- Define vibration and bearing-temperature monitoring, alarm and trip functions using the selected manufacturer limits. Trend the values rather than waiting for a shutdown.
- Obtain static, dynamic and service loads for the foundation or support frame. Confirm stiffness, anchors, grout, level, access and isolation with the civil and structural design.
- Provide a safe lifting and removal route for the rotating assembly and heavy service parts. Check door, roof, beam or crane clearances before finalizing the room.
- Keep feed free of damaging tramp material. Where justified, coordinate screening or a grinder or macerator with actual fibres and hard solids rather than assuming every obstruction should be ground.
Compare dewatering methods on the same sludge duty
| Technology | Where it may fit | Main comparison points |
|---|---|---|
| Decanter centrifuge | Enclosed continuous thickening or dewatering where high-speed machinery, power, wear control and specialist service can be supported. | Sludge trial, hydraulic and solids load, cake, centrate, polymer, power, torque, vibration, noise and maintenance support. |
| Belt filter press | Continuous dewatering where wash water, ventilation and routine belt attention are available. | Gravity drainage, belt loading, tracking, washing, open area, operator attention and cake handling. |
| Sludge screw press | Low-speed continuous dewatering for compatible sludge after testing. | Screen or ring condition, polymer, wash sequence, cake, capture, turndown and operator attention. |
| Filter press | Batch dewatering where filterability, cake release and the full cycle suit the duty. | Chamber volume, feed-pressure profile, cycle time, cloth care, cake discharge and batch storage. |
| Sludge drying beds | Land-available sites with suitable drainage, labour, storage and weather allowance. | Seasonal loading, area, underdrains, rain protection, removal cycle and filtrate management. |
Compare technologies at the same measured dry-solids load, sludge range, operating window, cake destination and acceptance method. Do not choose from a headline cake percentage or motor power alone.
The screw press versus decanter guide provides a worked trial comparison and a shared quotation checklist for both technologies.
Specify the complete centrifuge package
- Selected decanter, bowl and scroll geometry, drive arrangement, pond adjustment, casing, guards, wear protection, materials, access and noise treatment.
- Sludge holding and mixing, a compatible sludge feed pump, strainers or maceration where justified, flushing and sample points.
- Polymer preparation, dosing, dilution and injection, plus calibrated feed and polymer measurement. Use an electromagnetic flowmeter only where conductivity, full-pipe installation, liner, electrodes and cleaning suit the sludge.
- Torque or load control, differential-speed control, vibration and bearing-temperature monitoring, lubrication, alarms, trips, emergency stops and approved restart logic.
- Centrate collection and return, drains, wash and flush water, ventilation, odour containment and protection of electrical equipment in the wet area.
- Cake conveyor or hopper sized for peak discharge, cake consistency, fall height, bridging, containment and the final collection arrangement.
- MCC, drives and controls, electrical supply, harmonic or generator review where required, remote signals, historian values and safe power-restoration logic.
- Foundation loads, alignment, lifting system, working platforms, dismantling space, installation, commissioning, training, manuals, recommended spares and special tools.
For Pakistan sites, verify summer room temperature, dust control, ventilation, stable power or generator behavior, chemical and flush-water availability, drainage during monsoon conditions and access to trained mechanical service.
Commissioning and acceptance checks
- Before sludge, verify foundation, alignment, guards, covers, rotation, lubrication, flushing, drains, emergency stops, vibration and temperature channels, and every permissive and trip.
- Commission feed, polymer and cake handling as one sequence. Confirm flow calibration, dry-run protection, polymer calibration, conveyor capacity and centrate return before a sustained test.
- Run representative sludge at agreed minimum, normal and maximum duties. Record simultaneous feed, cake and centrate samples after conditions stabilize.
- Measure hydraulic and dry-solids throughput, cake solids, centrate solids, simplified or full mass-balance capture, active polymer dose, power, torque, vibration, bearing temperatures and operator actions.
- Demonstrate responses to high torque, excessive vibration, high bearing temperature, loss of feed or polymer, cake-conveyor fault, blocked discharge, emergency stop and power interruption by an approved safe method.
- Accept only within the agreed operating window and safety limits. Record settings, alarms, baseline vibration, samples and maintenance actions in the handover documents.
Operating and maintenance requirements
- Trend feed flow and solids, dry-solids load, polymer, cake and centrate results, bowl and differential settings, torque, power, vibration, temperatures and run hours.
- Investigate a rising torque or worsening centrate through feed, polymer, sludge variability, pond and differential settings, wear and discharge condition. Do not override protective limits to maintain production.
- Follow approved start, flush, shutdown and power-restoration sequences so sludge does not settle or harden inside the bowl.
- Inspect wear liners, scroll flights, discharge ports, seals, bearings, belts or couplings, gear or back-drive components and lubrication at the manufacturer intervals.
- Maintain vibration and temperature instruments and keep the baseline records used for condition monitoring. A quiet casing does not replace measured mechanical condition.
- Identify critical spares by installed serial number and revision. Plan balancing, rotating-assembly repair and other specialist work with an approved service route.

Common decanter centrifuge questions
Can a decanter be selected from feed flow alone?
No. State both hydraulic flow and dry-solids load across the operating range, then verify cake, centrate, polymer, power, torque, vibration and stable run time on representative sludge.
Does higher bowl speed always improve performance?
No. It changes the available separation force, but the result also depends on sludge, feed, polymer, pond, differential speed and the machine design. Higher speed can also increase power and wear.
Why does cake become wetter when feed increases?
The hydraulic or solids load may exceed the accepted window, residence and conveying conditions may change, or polymer and feed concentration may have shifted. Review measured process data before changing settings.
Can a centrifuge run unattended?
Automatic controls can manage the approved sequence and protective trips, but operators still need defined checks for feed, polymer, cake, centrate, torque, vibration, temperature, flushing and downstream handling.
Is one standby centrifuge always required?
That depends on sludge production, storage, disposal, permitted outage and service time. A project can compare installed standby capacity with enough mixed storage and a documented contingency plan.
