Coagulation, dosing & flotation

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems in Pakistan

Fine bubbles attach to suitable material and carry it to the surface. A pressurized recycle loop supplies dissolved air.

Where this equipment fits

Food, dairy, oily effluent and selected sludge thickening.

DAF can be relevant to a dairy, food-processing plant or oily wastewater stream in Pakistan when the contaminants respond to flotation. Free oil, emulsified oil and dissolved organics behave differently. The sample used for testing should represent production and cleaning periods rather than a single convenient grab sample.

How to select dissolved air flotation (daf) systems

Use these inputs to define the equipment duty before comparing proposals.

  • 01Hydraulic and solids loading
  • 02Recycle and air delivery
  • 03Conditioning and floated-sludge handling

Establish chemical conditioning through testing, then check hydraulic loading, solids loading and air delivery. Include the pressurized recycle system, skimmer, sludge withdrawal, controls and any downstream feed arrangement in the comparison.

What to check before choosing

DAF does not inherently remove dissolved salts. Coagulation or emulsion breaking may be needed before flotation.

Track floated-sludge consistency and the effect on dewatering. Changes in detergents, temperature or production can alter flotation behaviour and chemical demand.

What affects the price in Pakistan?

The quoted price depends on hydraulic and solids loading, materials, controls and the agreed supply scope. For a useful comparison, identify freight, taxes, installation, commissioning and initial spares as separate proposal items where applicable.

For replacement equipment, share the existing nameplate, photographs and connection dimensions. For a new installation, share the design flow or loading, site location and available space. Final availability, delivery and performance terms are confirmed with the selected equipment.

Integration with your treatment plant

Representative laboratory analysis and jar-test results. Chemical compatibility, storage and dosing range. Sludge production and downstream biological compatibility. These interfaces should be checked alongside the individual equipment specification.

Worked example: peak flow, recycle flow and solids load

Illustrative calculation, not a final DAF design or performance promise. Suppose a food plant sends 180 m³ of normal process wastewater over a 12-hour production period. The production flow is 180 ÷ 12 = 15 m³/hour. A separate 30 m³ cleaning discharge occurs over two hours, adding 15 m³/hour while it overlaps production. The peak DAF feed is therefore 30 m³/hour, even though the combined 210 m³/day averages only 8.75 m³/hour over 24 hours.

If an illustrative recycle flow of 25% of peak feed were used, the recycle loop would carry 30 × 0.25 = 7.5 m³/hour in addition to the raw feed. The actual recycle ratio, pressure and air dissolution must be set by the selected system design and confirmed wastewater conditions. Equalization may reduce the peak, but only if its usable volume, mixing, level controls and release rate are defined from the real discharge schedule.

At an illustrative inlet TSS of 600 mg/L during the 30 m³/hour peak, the incoming suspended-solids load is 30 × 600 ÷ 1,000 = 18 kg/hour. If a test demonstrated 75% TSS capture under agreed conditions, the captured suspended solids would be about 13.5 kg/hour. Coagulant precipitates, polymer, oil, grease and water in the float increase the actual sludge quantity, so this dry-solids estimate is not a hopper, pump or dewatering size.

Test the wastewater before fixing the chemical programme

A single clear-looking sample is not a reliable basis for a DAF proposal. Collect representative samples across production, product changes, start-up, cleaning and shutdown. Record the source, time, flow condition, temperature and chemicals used when each sample was taken.

A useful treatability programme can screen pH adjustment, emulsion breaking, coagulant type and dose, flocculant type and dose, mixing energy and reaction time. The test should include a flotation step or suitable pilot where the separation behaviour is important. A jar test can help select conditioning, but settling in a jar does not by itself prove DAF performance.

  • Measure relevant inlet and clarified-water parameters such as TSS, oil and grease, turbidity, COD fractions where useful, pH and temperature.
  • Record each chemical product, active concentration, preparation method, dose basis, order of addition, mixing time and observed floc.
  • Measure floated-sludge volume and solids concentration where practical, not only visual clarity.
  • Repeat promising conditions on another representative sample and identify the wastewater range the result covers.
  • Check whether the clarified water remains suitable for the next biological, filtration or discharge stage.

Use the test results to define the coagulation and flocculation system, not to support an unqualified removal claim.

Choose the separator for the contaminant

DAF is most relevant when bubbles can lift suspended particles or conditioned oil and grease. It is not automatically the right separator for every industrial wastewater.

  • Free oil: first assess segregation and a suitable gravity oil-water separator. Sending recoverable free oil through chemical treatment can add unnecessary sludge and chemical cost.
  • Emulsified oil or fine solids: testing may show that pH control, emulsion breaking, coagulation and flocculation are needed before flotation.
  • Dense, readily settleable solids: gravity clarification may be simpler. Compare the tested separation behaviour, footprint, sludge and operating needs.
  • Dissolved pollution: DAF removes material that can be floated directly or after conditioning. It does not inherently remove dissolved salts, and remaining biodegradable dissolved COD may still need biological treatment.

For a batch factory, an equalization tank can protect the DAF from rapid flow and concentration changes. Equalization does not replace representative testing or contaminant removal.

Define the complete DAF package

Two quotations can both say “DAF” while including very different equipment. State which party supplies and integrates each item:

  • Feed or equalization tank, mixer, level control, transfer pump and flow measurement.
  • pH adjustment, coagulant and flocculant storage, preparation, dosing, injection and reaction equipment.
  • Flocculation pipe or tank, mixer controls and the hydraulic conditions required to protect formed floc.
  • Flotation vessel, inlet distribution, clarified-water outlet, recycle take-off, bottom-solids removal and access platform.
  • Recycle pump, air supply, saturation or dissolution equipment, pressure controls, release devices and the operating range that produces stable whitewater.
  • Surface skimmer, beach or ramp, float hopper, sludge pump, sludge storage and the route to thickening or dewatering.
  • Electrical panel, instruments, alarms, interlocks, manual mode, emergency stops and restart logic after a power interruption.
  • Installation, commissioning, operator training, test consumables, initial chemicals, recommended spares, manuals and as-built drawings.

Review chemical handling with a compatible dosing skid. Where polymer is supplied as powder or emulsion, define the preparation, ageing, dilution water and dosing range using the polymer preparation guide.

Agree commissioning and performance acceptance

Write the acceptance basis before delivery. The test should distinguish mechanical commissioning from process performance.

  • Mechanical checks should verify rotation, valves, tank levels, leaks, pump operating points, recycle pressure and flow, air delivery, release devices, skimmer travel, sludge withdrawal, instruments, alarms and interlocks.
  • Process testing should use an agreed influent range and flow profile, stable operating period, chemical products and doses, recycle settings, sample points, test duration and laboratory methods.
  • Record feed flow, recycle flow and pressure, pH, chemical use, observed floc, whitewater condition, sludge removal and relevant inlet and outlet results.
  • Define how many valid test periods are required and what happens if the wastewater falls outside the agreed design range.
  • Confirm the floated-sludge concentration or handling basis, storage volume, removal frequency and return streams included in the test.

A clean-water run can confirm hydraulics, controls and whitewater generation. It cannot establish contaminant removal or chemical consumption for production wastewater.

Operating and maintenance requirements

Operators should trend feed flow and quality, pH, chemical dose, recycle flow and pressure, whitewater appearance, clarified-water quality, float condition and sludge removal. Production changes, detergents, temperature and a new chemical supplier can change the treatment response.

  • Inspect and clean chemical tanks, mixers, strainers, pumps, calibration columns, injection points and flocculation equipment at the documented intervals.
  • Check recycle-pump condition, air supply, saturation equipment, pressure controls and release devices when bubbles or float quality change.
  • Adjust the skimmer only from observed blanket condition and supplier instructions. Excessive speed can disturb separation, while delayed removal can allow float to break up or overflow.
  • Remove settled bottom solids before they reduce volume, become septic or interfere with hydraulics.
  • Keep the sludge hopper, pump and storage route available before starting production. DAF sludge is part of the process, not a waste stream to address later.

Keep chemical safety information, spill containment, ventilation, eyewash arrangements and isolation procedures suited to the selected products and Pakistan site conditions.

Common DAF buying questions

Can a supplier size DAF from daily flow alone?

No. The hourly and batch flow, solids load, oil form, wastewater variability, chemical conditioning and downstream duty all matter. State whether equalization is included and show the discharge schedule behind the design peak.

Does DAF remove all COD?

No. It can remove suspended or floatable material and COD associated with that material. Dissolved biodegradable COD may need biological treatment, while dissolved salts need a different assessment.

Can the chemical dose be guaranteed from one jar test?

Do not rely on one convenient sample. The dose should be evaluated across representative production and cleaning conditions, then confirmed during commissioning within an agreed wastewater range.

What happens to DAF float?

It must be collected, stored and removed or dewatered. Its quantity and handling depend on captured solids, oil, chemical precipitates, polymer and water content. Include the complete sludge route in the proposal.

Compare flotation with lamella settling

Use the lamella clarifier test and comparison guide to compare settling and flotation on the same wastewater, chemistry, peak flow, outlet basis, sludge production, utilities and operator capability.

Common questions

Does DAF replace biological treatment?

It may reduce suspended material and associated organic load, but remaining biodegradable dissolved pollution may still need biological treatment. The required sequence follows the actual effluent analysis.
