Where this equipment fits
Treated sewage and industrial reuse with a defined microbial target.
For a housing society STP in Lahore or an industrial reuse project in Karachi, the important question is what quality of water reaches the UV reactor. A plant with solids carryover may first need clarification or filtration improvements. If disinfected water enters a storage tank, the design also needs to address contamination and regrowth after UV treatment.
How to select uv disinfection systems
Use these inputs to define the equipment duty before comparing proposals.
- 01Peak flow and measured UV transmittance
- 02Validated dose and organism target
- 03Lamp ageing, sleeve fouling and cleaning
Ask for the performance basis at the maximum flow and minimum expected UV transmittance, allowing for lamp ageing and sleeve fouling. Flow capacity on its own is not an adequate UV specification. Open-channel and closed-vessel units have different hydraulic and installation requirements.
What to check before choosing
UV leaves no lasting disinfectant residual and does not remove TDS. Solids can shield organisms, so upstream treatment and storage hygiene still matter.
Include lamp and quartz-sleeve replacement access, a cleaning method, intensity monitoring and a response to low-dose conditions. Discuss electrical supply and restarting after interruptions before selecting controls.
What affects the price in Pakistan?
The quoted price depends on peak flow and measured uv transmittance, materials, controls and the agreed supply scope. For a useful comparison, identify freight, taxes, installation, commissioning and initial spares as separate proposal items where applicable.
For replacement equipment, share the existing nameplate, photographs and connection dimensions. For a new installation, share the design flow or loading, site location and available space. Final availability, delivery and performance terms are confirmed with the selected equipment.
Integration with your treatment plant
Microbial target and worst-case treated-water quality. Peak flow and required dose / contact conditions. Monitoring, spare parts and downstream storage. These interfaces should be checked alongside the individual equipment specification.
Related engineering and plant servicesWorked example: daily volume is not reactor capacity
Illustrative calculation, not a plant design or performance guarantee. Suppose a housing society in Pakistan produces 240 m³ of treated effluent per day. Dividing by 24 gives an average of 10 m³/hour. If that water is transferred through UV in an eight-hour window, the average during transfer is 30 m³/hour.
Now assume the transfer pump can deliver 40 m³/hour at the installed duty. A quotation based only on 10 m³/hour would miss the proposed operating condition. Ask the designer to confirm the maximum flow that can actually reach the UV unit, including simultaneous pumps, rather than applying an arbitrary multiplier to daily volume.
The 40 m³/hour figure is a hydraulic input, not a completed UV selection. The proposal still needs a microbial target and a verified operating range for the actual water. These assumed figures do not describe an Aquenvia installation.
What to send for a comparable UV quotation
- Flow: daily volume, minimum and maximum instantaneous flow, pumping hours and pump duty information. Mark estimated figures clearly.
- Water quality: dated samples from the proposed UV inlet, including UV transmittance (UVT), TSS, turbidity and microbial results. Specify UVT at 254 nm over a 1 cm path. A BOD, COD and TSS report is useful background, not a substitute for UVT.
- Treatment objective: intended reuse or discharge, required microbial result and the project specification. Ask the reviewer to confirm missing targets before final selection.
- Installation: channel levels or pipe size, available head or pressure, layout, isolation arrangements and lamp-removal space. Include existing drawings and photographs where available.
- Commercial scope: list reactor, controls, sensors, civil work, electrical work, installation, commissioning, training and initial spares separately. State site location and requested delivery date without assuming stock.
Request the validation evidence and operating limits for the proposed reactor, not just a lamp wattage or nominal flow label. The DWI UV guidance explains validation, UVT and monitoring principles. It concerns public water supplies, not Pakistan wastewater law; no drinking-water dose or limit from it is being prescribed here.
Agree the alarm response before commissioning
For a site with generator changeover or interrupted power, agree what happens to water while UV restarts. Prevent inadequately disinfected water reaching the reuse outlet. Confirm the hold or return route, its available capacity and who responds to an alarm.
Record lamp hours, cleaning and replacement dates, flow and UV sensor readings. Set cleaning and sensor-check intervals from the equipment instructions and observed fouling, not a universal calendar. Test the restart and low-output response at handover. These operating principles are explained in DWI guidance sections 5.9 to 5.19.
Include compatible UV lamps and quartz sleeves in the spare-parts discussion. Ask who supplies them, what is included in the quotation and how the plant operates during replacement.
Plan the stages around UV
If particles carry over from treatment, review disc filtration and the wider tertiary filtration options against the measured solids load. For a new housing project, include this review in the complete STP design and commissioning scope, rather than buying an isolated disinfection unit.
Common questions
Can UV remove salts or reduce TDS?
No. UV is a disinfection process. Where the reuse application requires lower dissolved salts, a separate process such as suitably designed RO may be needed.
Does clear water mean UV will work?
Visual clarity is insufficient. Test UV transmittance and assess suspended solids, microbial targets and peak flow before sizing the reactor.
Can an existing STP be upgraded with UV?
Potentially. Review the outlet quality and hydraulic profile first, then confirm whether upstream polishing and changes to storage or discharge arrangements are needed.
